The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today we celebrate and rejoice at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary! We greet one another as intimate bearers of Mary’s name, blessed as we are to participate in the highest mission reserved and entrusted to her in salvation history. She was chosen to be the Mother of God and we rejoice at the certainty that she is our Mother too.
Let us take at heart Sr. M. Micaela’s response to the Letter of Pope Francis. Mother General shared with us her deep concern regarding the value and the significance of our sacerdotal apostolate in the Church today. We participate in her response by qualifying concretely what our Province can offer. Being reminded that Friday is a day of prayer for the sanctification of the Clergy, let us offer our prayers, fasting and penance from September 14, the Exaltation of the Cross, to October 26 Friday before the Solemnity of Jesus Divine Master, remembering in a particular way the survivors, victims of sexual abuse, the abuse of power and of conscience at the hands of priests.
We are also united in prayer with all Christians in the world as the Church celebrates the “Season of Creation” from September 1 to October 4, 2018. Let us join the activities of our local church and intensify the community practices of caring for our Mother Earth: weekly Earth Hour; carrying out the four R’s of recycle, reuse, refuse, rot; responsibility in the use of water and electricity; and witness of a simple and austere lifestyle. In our Sunday liturgies, may I suggest that we dedicate September 16 to Humanity Sunday for victims of human trafficking; September 23 – Ocean Sunday particularly for fisherfloks; September 30- Forest Sunday for indigenous people who are displaced and abused.
The Synod on Young People this coming month of October reminds us to include the youth in our prayer intentions and we offer great thanksgiving to God for the gift of vocations given us in our religious family. We are blessed with four novices and three pre-postulants and let us continue to pray for those whom our Divine Master is preparing to join us soon: Cara Moreno from Sarangani Province who was working in Bahrain and Alaine Jamorol from Zamboanga del Sur who was working in Hong Kong. There is also Lalamea Vaohea from the Delegation of Australia who will be joining our community in the formation of postulancy.
May we continue in our communion with Mother General and her Council, remembering as well our sisters suffering due to illness. We wish to thank them affectionately for their precious ‘offerings’ in the life and mission of the Congregation!
In the maternal heart of Mary,
Sr. M. Anthony Basa
