National Youth Day 2019
The delegates of the National Youth Day (NYD) 2019 started to arrive a day before the official date of the event. More than 11,000 delegates & 5,000 volunteers from different archdioceses came to experience the six-day activity of enlivening the sense of being “Servants of the Lord”. The NYD opening program was graced with historical play on the early periods of Christianity in our country. The activities include procession from Cebu Sports Center to the Basilica de Sto. Niño where Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma led the opening mass.
In Cebu community, we are blessed with the opportunity to be foster parents of ten young ladies who are coming from Palo and Naval, Leyte. Their short stay in our community has made us relived our youthfulness and friendship with Jesus through their spontaneity and enthusiasm to learn. We are grateful to God for the gift of a newfound friendship with these young people that challenge us to make a shift in our “old ways” to “new ways”. As Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, urged the youth “to never get tired of being instruments of hope, love and life” so also for all of us for this, too is our vocation.
The six-day gathering was culminated with a Holy Mass officiated by Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, with “fruits” as his “pabaon” in his homily - “the fruit of silence is prayer; fruit of prayer is faith; fruit of faith is love; fruit of love is service and the fruit of service is peace.” As the NYD participants went back to their provinces, they indeed brought with them the various fruits that they received from this grace filled event of our Church. May these fruits, friendships and beautiful stories/memories of their encounter with the Risen Lord lead and inspire them towards a bright future.
